Is it the same with other scanning applications like Apple Image Capture and HP Smart? Refer to the document HP Printers - How to Scan (Mac)  for help.

If the issue persists, uninstall the HP Printer Software and try again. Follow the steps from the document HP Printers - Uninstalling HP Printer Software (Mac)

Try scanning.

@joshbraun, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Are you able to make photocopies using the ADF? If yes, follow the steps below-

ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with its software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer firmware and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

HP Easy Scan might not find your printer if the software or driver needs to be updated. Try the solutions below, and then try to add your printer to HP Easy Scan.

  • Update HP Easy Scan: Open HP Easy Scan. On the upper bar, click HP Easy Scan, click Check for Updates, and then install any available updates.

Checking for updates in HP Easy Scan

Try scanning.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for getting back to me.  I updated the firmware and the mac OS (Catalina 10.15.2).  Scanning only works from the document feeder.  If I put a doc on the glass I get the error message that no docs are in the feeder.  This works perfectly on my other Mac that isn't running Maverick not Catlina.
