I recently had to replace my computer and subsequently found out the HP's Scan & Capture has been retired. That's rather unfortunate as I have used the HP Scan & Capture app for years, and it was great--simple and easy to use, no issues. The replacement, I guess, is to use HP Smart--which IMO, is anything but. My experience thus far is HP Smart is garbage vs Scan & Capture. Today for example, I can't get the darn thing to scan anything. Instead, I get "couldn't connect" error messages, or "printer is offline" (which it is not). 

So, is there any way to get Hp Scan & Capture back? If not, can anybody help me to get HP Smart to quit being Stupid, and actually do something as simple as a scan a document? Are there any alternatives to HP smart (if Scan & Capture is not available)?

I completely understand how frustrating it is, especially when your HP Officejet 7740 seems ready, prints perfectly, yet refuses to cooperate when it comes to scanning. Let’s work together to bring back that satisfying scan-whirr. Here’s how to tackle this:

1. Restart Everything & Reconnect

Often, the simplest fix is the most effective: power down your printer, computer, and router. Wait about 60 seconds, then restart everything.

  • Ensure your printer and computer are both on the same Wi‑Fi network – no VPNs or mobile hotspots in between. Scanning relies on local network detection.

 

2. Reinstall Drivers & HP Smart

  1. Uninstall HP Smart and any existing printer drivers.
  2. Visit https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/details/hp-officejet-pro-7740-wide-format-all-in-one-printer-se... page and install the Full Feature Software and Driver for the OfficeJet Pro 7740.
  3. Reinstall HP App: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site, and re-add your printer within the app.

 

3. Consider Alternatives to the HP app.

  • Use Windows' built-in “Scan” or “Windows Fax and Scan”, no HP account needed. Simply search “Scan” in the Start menu.
  • Install the legacy HP Scan utility included with the Full Feature Software. During installation, choose Full Software and Drivers instead of just the HP app.
