HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - G510n
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Officejet 4500 Wireless can print, but I have trouble scanning. When I select scan on my printer, it says "No Scan Options. Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot." On HP Smart, when I select Scan, it says "Scanning is Currently Unavailable"

Hi @sl64,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering issues with scanning on your HP Officejet 4500 Wireless, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the problem.

Check Connection:

  • Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer or network. Check the wireless connection and make sure the printer is on the same network as your computer.

Restart Devices:

  • Power off both your computer and the printer. Wait for a few seconds and then power them back on. This can often resolve communication issues.

Update Drivers:

  • Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. Visit the HP official website and download the latest drivers for your specific printer model.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can automatically diagnose and resolve scanning issues. You can download it from the HP website and run it to check for and fix any problems.

Check Software Settings:

  • Verify that your scanning software (such as HP Smart) is set up correctly. Make sure it is configured to recognize your printer as the default scanning device.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Sometimes, security software or firewalls can interfere with the scanning process. Temporarily disable any firewall or security software and see if the issue persists.

Reinstall Software:

  • Uninstall the existing scanning software and reinstall it. This can help resolve any corrupted files or settings.

Check for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:

  • Make sure that the Windows Image Acquisition service is running on your computer. You can check this by typing "services.msc" in the Windows search bar, finding the Windows Image Acquisition service, and ensuring it is set to "Automatic" and is running.

Scan from Computer:

  • Try initiating the scan from your computer using the scanning software that came with the printer. This may help identify whether the issue is with the printer or the scanning software.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
