I have two HP printers. Both brand new, but different model. The OfficeJet 5235 fails to open a connection to the device (-21355) when using Image Capture to scan. The HP Smart app works to scan. The other printer (DeskJet 3755) works fine with Image Capture and both were set up the same way.
One suggestion elsewhere was to NOT use HP Smart but to set up the printer with the Mac utility and make sure it was set up as an AirPrint printer. Doesn't matter which method I use.
I also did a reset on the printer as described in other places. Didn't help, even with doing a reboot of the Mac after reseting the printer, removing the printer, adding it back in, etc., etc.
I'm giving you all this to avoid getting more suggestions of the same kind.

Hi @jrcaz
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I understand you are not able to scan from your MAC. I'd be happy to assist you. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for any software updates on MAC, update to macOS 10.15.3
Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
Use HP Easy Scan to scan from your MAC.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I did the recommended printer reset and it did not help. The reset did NOT delete the Wi-Fi connection on the printer. I would have expected a reset to do that.
I also deleted the printer from Mac after the reset and before turning the printer on.
The next thing to try is to delete the printer from the Mac and install the driver from the CD BEFORE connecting the printer.

This was a power reset and it is not supposed to delete any of the settings on the printer. Kindly perform the other steps provided and use HP Easy Scan to scan from your MAC to check if that helps.
- Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
- This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the MAC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
Keep me posted for further assistance.
