About 2 weeks ago, my printer started to give me an error message whenever I try to scan or copy something via the scanner on the printer lid.  I can still copy and scan via the paper feeder, but if I put a document under the lid and tell it to scan, the printer says that it is unable to scan, copy, or fax.  Then the printer display says that it is trying to scan, at which point, the display (and printer) freezes and needs to be restarted.  It doesn't matter if I use my computer Easy Scan app or if I give the scan/copy command from the printer's display - I get the same result.

I have tried restarting the printer (several times), restarting my laptop (several times), restarting both at the same time...etc.  The scanner bar moves back and forth with no unusual noises or difficulties when I first turn the printer on and when I first tell it to scan.  The scanner light appears to be working correctly.  The problem is when the scanner bar actually begins to scan the document.  My guess is that the issue is in the software of the printer, but I'm not sure what to do to correct it.

I have been having general problems with the scanner for about 2 months, since it downloaded an update from HP.  However, up until 2 weeks ago, the problems were with the scan-to-computer function only.

Just to reiterate: when a document is inserted via the paper feeder, it will scan or copy perfectly with no issues.

Thanks for your response.  I tried the suggestions on the page you sent me to, but it did not solve the problem.  I ended up pulling the printer out a little from the wall, and in moving it around, it seems to be working fine now.  Perhaps the power cord was pushed up against the wall so tight that it caused some of the connections not to work the best.  I've heard that that can happen with electronics sometimes.

For the moment, the problem is fixed.  Thank you again for your willingness to help!

Welcome to the HP Forum!

It is a fantastic site to find information, tips, and suggestions.

After reading your post I see that you are unable to copy and scan using the scanner glass but the document feeder works fine. To resolve this issue I suggest trying reset on the printer and updating firmware, use this link: Click here
