HP Officejet 7610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Occasionally (about once a week), when I get a phone call, a message pops up on my printer asking if I want to accept a fax. When I answer the phone or let it go to voicemail, the message remains on my printer/copier/fax. I then have to turn it off at the fused plug strip and turn it back on to clear the message before I can use my printer to print or copy. I don't believe anyone is trying to fax me anything, so why does this message keep popping up?

@BotheredBob,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are getting a pop on the printer when you receive an incoming call.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Remove USB cable, if present.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  4. Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If you continue facing the issue, then update the printer firmware following the steps in the below article.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have been away for quite a while and recently returned home. I tried your fix, step-by-step and it worked for a while, but occasionally, I still receive calls that cause my printer to believe it's an incoming fax, and it still freezes my printer. It remains in the 'accept fax' or hang up mode, and will not print because it's "stuck" there. I can only clear it by briefly turning off the plug strip (for even a second) and turning it back on. That causes the printer to turn off and turn back on, resetting it.

Sometimes I have printing problems because, somehow, the printer setting changes all by itself from "default printer" to "default fax." I have manually tried to reset that particular setting, but it only resets when I use the HP troubleshooter and click the appropriate buttons to make the 'printer' my default.

I have repeatedly checked for updated driver downloads, and every time the message appears saying I have the latest driver. I have come to the conclusion that my printer, my All-In-One HP Officejet 7610 is too old to be supported anymore, though it still prints everything, including photos, very well...when I get it off the fax mode.

Thank you again, but I guess I'm stuck with this problem until I decide to purchase a new printer.

@BotheredBob

Restore factory defaults and setup the fax again and check if that works fine.

Here are the steps for factory reset

This section provides instructions about how to restore your printer back to the factory defaults.

1. Touch (Right arrow), and then touch Setup .

2. Touch Tools , and then touch Restore Factory Defaults.

I hope that helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.
