I am trying to copy a document on my HP Officejet Pro 8600.  I placed the original facedown on the scanner glass.  There are no originals in the ADF.  I then pressed "Copy" and "Start Black".  the Offficejet then "thinks" the original is in the ADF and tries to copy a non-existent orginal.  The Officejet then generates a "paper jam
in the ADF" error message with instructions to clear the paper jam and press "OK" and spews out a piece of paper from the paper tray. There is not an option to "go back".  If I try to humor the Officejet by opening and closing the cover for the ADF and pressing "OK", the Officeject generates a copy that is covered with black ink.  If I request o copy preview, the document that I have on the scanner glass is shown.  I can adjust the margins, etc.  When I then select "Copy" and "Start Black", the Officejet reverts to trying to copy a non-existent document in the ADF and generates the "paper jam" message again.  Since there is not a "go back" option, I turn the printer off, then back on, and try again.

How do I train either me or the Officejet to copy from the scanner glass when the original is on the scanner glass NOT the ADF?

Thank you for your assistance in resolving this frustrating problem.

Hi Knitter507,

Try doing a hard reset as described in the following link.  Click Here

If that didn't help, can you print a Printer Status Report and give me the  A.) Product #  and  B.) Firmware Version  for the printer?  To print the report, press the right arrow on the printer control screen and then Setup / Reports / Printer Status Report.

What is the operating system for your computer?

Are you able to make a photocopy trough the ADF?

Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.

Hi Rich,

I did a hard reset and then tested the copy function.  Once the copier tried to copy from the ADF when the document was on the scanner glass.  I did have the lid up, as I was trying to copy from a fat book.  After receiving the paper-jam message, I turned the Officejet off and back on, put the lid down and tried again.  The Officejet did copy the document on the scanner glass.

I think the problem is resolvled.

Just in case it isn't, for your records:

Product Number: CN579A

Firmware Version: CLP1CN1304AR

OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1

Yes, I was able to photocopy through the ADF

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi, I am having the exact same problem with my 8620. I have tried everything suggested in this thread and it still won't copy or scan from the glass. Please help!

Hard reset did not work on my OfficeJet Pro 8600. I am trying to scan pages from a book with the lid up, but printer keeps saying ADF is jammed and will not let me scan. VERY frustrating.
