HP OfficeJet Pro 9135 All-in-One Printer

When I try to scan from autofeed I get an error of "document feeder issue".  If I unplug the machine it will let me scan one package but then goes right back to that same error.

Hi @Jennifer080319,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 9130 displays a “Document Feeder Issue” whenever you try to scan using the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Since power cycling allows you to complete one scan before the error returns, let's try the following:

Check and clean the ADF

  • Remove any documents from the feeder.
  • Open the ADF cover and check for any small pieces of paper, dust, or other obstructions.
  • Clean the ADF rollers and separation pad with a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.
  • Make sure the rollers are completely dry before testing again.

Check the document guides

  • Load a few sheets of plain, flat paper into the ADF.
  • Adjust the paper guides so they are snug against the paper without being too tight.
  • Make sure the documents are not folded, curled, or damaged.

Test the ADF

  • Try scanning a single sheet directly from the printer's control panel.
  • If the first scan works but the second scan consistently produces the document feeder issue, note whether the document stops, feeds unevenly, or makes any unusual noise.

If the error continues after cleaning and checking the ADF, please let us know whether the ADF physically feeds the document correctly before displaying the error. Also, please share whether scanning from the flatbed glass works normally.

This will help determine whether the issue is isolated to the ADF mechanism or is related to the scanner itself.

Thank you for your response.   I have done as requested and still am getting the same results. When I am able to scan an item, it tells me to reload the original as the ADF wasn't able to pick up the original but it actually does scan and I can save it. However, that's where it gets a little confusing as I can save it but the window then opens up and I can't perform anything further as I have to close out of the HP app to continue. I apologize for my lack of terminology trying to explain this. The ADF or scanning from the flatbed does not work. It did work up until the last 2 weeks. I've uninstalled everything, reinstalled again multiple times and it just isn't working.

Hi @Jennifer080319,

Welcome back, and thank you for the detailed update.

No need to apologize; the description is clear. Since you have already cleaned and checked the ADF, reinstalled the HP software multiple times, and confirmed that neither the ADF nor the flatbed is currently working, while the issue only started about two weeks ago, I would not recommend repeating the software installation steps.

The fact that the printer can sometimes complete a scan after being power-cycled but then reports that the ADF could not pick up the original is also important.

At this point, please run the HP Print and Scan Doctor/HP diagnostic scan test if it is available for your printer, and let me know whether it detects a scanner or reports a specific error.

Also, please try making a copy directly from the printer's control panel using the flatbed glass. If copying from the flatbed also fails, that would help confirm that the problem is not limited to the HP app or computer.

If the flatbed and ADF both fail directly from the printer after the power cycle, please let me know. That information will help determine the appropriate next step.

Best regards,

Hi Kuroi,  I ran the HP/Scan Doctor and it did detect the scanner, I went through it 3 times and am still having the same issues. It will scan 1 time from the ADF but after that I have to turn the machine off then on to scan another file.  I can make copies from the flatbed and from the ADF perfectly fine.  I am now getting an error that it can't detect the scanner and it must be on the same network as my desktop. I am hardwired for my network on the desktop but the printer/scanner is wireless. Would that make  a difference? I appreciate your help but I think I am going to reach out to return the machine and pick something different as I can't run my small business like with this machine.
