Hello @retired116, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting and for sharing the scan sample. Based on the image, the vertical colored lines appearing across the entire scan are typically related to a scanner hardware issue, scanner calibration problem, or contamination on the scanner glass/ADF scan strip rather than an ink cartridge or printing issue.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Perform a Scanner Hardware Test

  • Make a standalone copy directly from the printer control panel.
  • If the copied page also shows the same vertical lines, the issue is coming from the scanner hardware.

Clean the Scanner Glass and ADF Scan Strip

  • Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.
  • Clean the large scanner glass and the narrow scan strip located beside it using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth (not directly on the glass).
  • Check carefully for dust, correction fluid, fingerprints, or small debris.

Scan from Different Sources

  • Place a document on the flatbed scanner and scan.
  • Then scan the same document through the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).
  • Compare the results to determine whether the issue is isolated to the flatbed scanner or ADF scanning path.

Perform a Partial Reset

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and power the printer back on.

Update the Printer Firmware

  • Ensure the HP Officejet Pro 8600 is running the latest available firmware version.
  • Firmware updates can resolve scanner communication and calibration-related issues.

Check for an Internal Scanner Failure

  • Scan and copy several different documents.
  • If every scan and copy consistently produces vertical colored lines, regardless of the computer, application, or scan settings, the scanner assembly may have developed a hardware fault.

To assist further, please let us know:

  • Do the lines appear when making a copy directly from the printer?
  • Does the issue occur when scanning from the flatbed glass, the ADF, or both?
  • Are you scanning to a Windows PC, Mac, or using HP Smart?

Have a great day!

None of those solutions worked.  I've tried using 3 different Windows 11 systems, tried to scan from both the feeder, scanner glass, plain blank page, and no page with all being the same,  Did it in b/w and had b/w verticle lines..  Also used the copier function with the exact same results.

The printing functions are still working fine.

Thank you for confirming. @retired116

Since you have already tested three different Windows 11 systems, both the ADF and flatbed, blank pages, black-and-white scans, and even copies directly from the printer, with the same vertical lines each time, this rules out the computer, scanning software, and the original document as the cause.

Please try the following checks:

Perform a Scanner Self-Test Copy

  • Place a clean white sheet on the scanner glass and make a copy directly from the printer control panel.
  • If the vertical lines appear on the copy, the scanner optics are generating the defect before the image reaches the computer.

Inspect the Scanner CIS Assembly

  • Open the scanner lid and carefully inspect the entire scanner glass.
  • Pay particular attention to scratches, residue, adhesive marks, correction fluid, or defects on the glass surface.
  • Use a flashlight at an angle to identify any damage that may not be visible under normal lighting.

Check Scanner Calibration

  • Power on the printer and open the scanner lid.
  • Locate the white calibration backing beneath the lid.
  • Ensure it is clean, securely attached, and free from discoloration, stains, or damage, as calibration issues can cause vertical line artifacts across scans and copies.

Semi-Full Reset

  • If available for your model, perform a semi-full reset from the printer's support menu to reinitialize scanner settings and calibration data.
  • After the reset, test a copy directly from the control panel.

Since the issue appears during both scanning and copying and persists regardless of the source document or computer used, the evidence strongly indicates a failure within the scanner optical/CIS assembly or scanner calibration system.
