HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One

Just purchased 7602 HP printer. I cannot fax directly from the printer. Cannot get a dial tone. When trying to fax while I was on landline, got the fax tones. Otherwise, the fax shows up as "no answer." The receiving fax line is available to receive faxes.

If you're experiencing issues with faxing directly from your HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One Printer, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

 

1. Check Phone Line Connection

Ensure that the phone line is properly connected:

  • Connect one end of the phone cord to your telephone wall jack.
  • Connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LINE on the back of the printer.

2. Verify Phone Cord

Use the phone cord supplied with the printer to ensure compatibility. If the cord is too short, you can use a longer 2-wire phone cord.

3. Get a Dial Tone

Test the phone line for a dial tone:

  • Connect a working phone and phone cord to the telephone wall jack.
  • Check if you hear a dial tone. If not, contact your telephone company to resolve any issues with the line.
  • Ensure no other equipment (such as extension phones or computers using dial-up modems) is in use on the same line.

4. Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM)

Phone lines with poor sound quality can cause faxing problems. Try disabling ECM on the printer:

  • From the printer control panel, navigate to Fax settings.
  • Turn off Error Correction Mode.
  • Try faxing again.

5. Use Fax Test

Run a fax test to diagnose the issue:

  • From the printer control panel, go to Setup or Fax Setup.
  • Select Run Fax Test or Fax Test Report.
  • Review the report for any errors or instructions.

6. Check for Digital Phone Lines

Ensure the phone line is analog, not digital:

  • Connect a regular analog phone to the line.
  • Listen for a dial tone. If you do not hear a normal dial tone, the phone line might be set up for digital phones which are incompatible with faxing directly from the printer.

7. Evaluate PBX or ISDN Lines

If using a private branch exchange (PBX) or integrated services digital network (ISDN):

  • Confirm the terminal adapter is correctly configured for your country/region.
  • Ensure the printer is connected to the correct port on the terminal adapter.

8. Address DSL Connection Issues

If your Internet connection is via DSL, ensure you have a DSL filter connected:

  • Use a parallel splitter to connect both the printer and DSL modem.
  • Test the line for clear sound quality.

9. Reviewing Line Noise

Check the phone line for static or noise:

  • Turn off your DSL modem for at least 15 minutes, then turn it back on and check for a clear dial tone.
  • Remove any phone splitters temporarily and connect the printer directly to the telephone wall jack.

Additional Steps for Direct Fax

If the No Answer message persists:

  • Verify the recipient's fax number and ensure it is correct.
  • Ensure any voice mail services on your line are disabled while faxing.
  • Ensure distinctive ring services are set correctly.
