HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer

My HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer has been working well for years. In the past week it lost its connection with my Xfinity residential gateway router(a Technicolor XB8). I tried all the recommended steps, including restarting the router and the printer, going through the printer's Wireless Setup Wizard and still the blue light kept flashing the and printer showed as Offline. The HP Smart app couldn't help because it couldn't access the offline device. I couldn't get Wireless Direct to work either.

I connected a USB cable and went through the steps to install a USB connected printer using the HP Smart app. Once the printer was installed, I was able to print successfully, however the blue light was still flashing and I wanted to be able to access the printer wirelessly. I decided to try to update the printer's firmware and driver. I went to the HP site and downloaded the Full Webpack exe file and executed it. Still no luck because the wizard wouldn't let me select the device.

I tried downloading the firmware to a USB memory stick and plugged it into the printer's USB port, but couldn't figure out how to update it from the printer's control panel.

I finally solved the problem by going back to the HP Smart app and choosing the option to Add Printer, and selected the Convert a USB Connected Device to Wireless option, went through that wizard and presto, the blue light stopped flashing and the printer is now communicating with the router. This whole exercise took me over two hours and I was still never able to update the firmware because the wizard's dialog box wouldn't permit me to select the printer.

Can anyone please tell me how to reliably update the firmware?
