HP Photosmart C3180 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My C3180 all in one printer worked fine on my old desktop running win 7. But on my new laptop running windows 10 connected via USB, I finally got it recognised and installed so it could print, but it's not being recognised to be able to scan. I've tried most things suggested on the HP support page for my product, including the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and HP Smart. The printer is being recognised as being installed, though not as a USB printer. When I follow the instructions on these programs, I end up going round in circles...and the printer is then no longer recognised to do anything via these apps!

Please can anyone help solve this little annoying conundrum. Thanks

Hi @Gerryw1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

HP Photosmart C3180 All-in-One Printer for windows 10 is not available from the HP website. However, you can install the printer using windows built-in drivers

You can scan using windows scan, or Microsoft paint-

On Paint -

  1. Open Paint. Not all models are compatible with all listed operating systems. ...
  2. Click File → From Scanner or Camera. If the File is not available on the menu bar, click Alt on your keyboard, to display it.
  3. If prompted, select your scanner from the list and click OK.
  4. Choose your desired scan options. ...
  5. Click Scan.

Scan app-

Once your scanner is installed, use the Windows Scan app to scan a picture or document. Here's how:

Note: Need to install the Windows Scan app? You can get the app at Microsoft Store.

  1. Make sure your scanner is turned on.
  2. In the search box on the taskbar, type Windows Scan, and then select Scan from the results.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Place the item you want to scan face down on the scanner's flatbed and close the cover.
    • Place the item you want to scan in the scanner's document feeder.
  4. On the Scan page, do the following:
    • Under Scanner, select the scanner you want to use.
    • Under Source, select the location you prefer to scan from.
    • Under File type, select the type of file you want the scan to be saved as. For example, you can save the file in different file formats—such as JPEG, Bitmap, and PNG.
    • Select Show more to show the Save file to options.
    • Under Save file to, browse to the location where you want to save the scan.
  5. Select Scan at the bottom of the screen to scan your document or picture.
  6. After your scan is finished, select View to see the scanned file before you save it, or select Close to save it. You can edit the scanned document or picture in the preview that appears when you select to view.

You may refer to Install and use a scanner in Windows 10

Thanks for the reply but the problem still remains. I get told its been installed but the programs mentioned don't recognise the printer or scanner. I've followed the instructions to Add a USB-connected Printer to Windows but it still doesn't work. I'm not sure if it has to do with a virtual printer port or something. At one point I got it to print, but now it won't print!

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to the USB01 port on the computer.

Hope this helps!

Let me know!

Well somehow I had created another USB01 port in the Settings, Properties. I deleted it.... and then made sure that I chose USB001(virtual printer port). I can now get it to print again!

I have 3 USB sockets on my laptop....not sure which is 01....but the same thing appears to occur with all 3 i.e. I can print but it still won't scan!

HP Recommended

For scanning try using the windows scanner options.

Hope this helps!

I've tried that...it just says 'no scanner detected'. I've pretty much tried everything as stated above. It was never a problem with Windows 7, and I always used windows fax & scan

I've sent you a private message with further instructions to get this issue sorted.

Hope this helps!
