HP Phtosmart D110
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm troubleshooting my parents' HP Photosmart D110 wireless printer. On their desktop they were able to just hit the scan button on the device and scan instantly. Now since switching to a Windows 10 laptop they're getting a message that prompts to scan from the computer. I've confirmed that the printer is successfully on the wifi and can print without issue. On the laptop itself the printing features work fine but it won't detect the device as a scanner, so none of the software options to scan will work. I have the HP Smart App installed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer. I've tried using the useless Print/Scan doctor application that points me to a driver download page without any drivers to download. What am I missing? How do I get Windows to recognize the device as a scanner?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

The source of the issue :

There is no software for this printer and Windows 10.

Instead the user is directed to install the Windows built-in print drivers.

True - Windows built-in print drivers provide basic print function.

True - The Doctor does not understand the problem - it cannot exit cleaning from "no drivers for this printer and OS version".

Web Services is no longer available on this printer - assuming the app works at all, lack of Web Services makes HP Smart "not-so-smart"

True - The printer can still be used to scan from the computer -- the methods are more limited than if the printer still had full driver software available.

HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver

Scan?  See Section FAQ > How do I use the printer functions with the built-in driver?

Example

Scan documents and photos: Complete scan jobs with a Windows app that works with the built-in driver.

  • Windows Fax and Scan: In Windows, search for and open Windows Fax and Scan. Click New Scan, and then select your printer.
  • Windows Paint: In Windows, search for and open Paint. Click FileFrom scanner or camera.
  • Windows Scan app: In Windows, search for and open the Windows Scan app. If it is not listed, go to Windows Scan (in English) to install it.

Personal Opinion:

If your parents agree, it is perhaps time for a newer printer.

If you can do so, get a printer that includes an actual printer display panel (your little 110 has a display / control panel).

Why?  Printer models that have display panels are easier to use for most people, especially anyone who does not wish to decipher light patterns to figure out what the printer is trying to say.

Think "Envy" or "OfficeJet" - check the specifications - read the User Guide...
