Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet Pro 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Printer Assistant recently decided not to to scan anything -- (Surface Pro 4, Windows 10 (64)).  I have been scanning pictures with no problem until yesterday (10/25/20).  I have done everything I can find - rebooting, clearing caches, clearing the printer, and anything else you can think of -- including reinstalling (several times, I might add) HP software.  Will NOT let me scan like I used to, and HP Printer Assistant is GONE.  How can I get it back and get my scanner to work again -- it was working wonderfully until yesterday.  I've looked for info on this under HP support, to no avail.

@jd5403, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Perform a clean reinstallation of pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try printing and scanning.

If the issue persists, use the HP Scan Extended app to scan and check if that helps.

Click here to download the app.

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

I did that 5 times already.  Nothing.  Can't find the HP icon on the desktop.  Can't find a file so I can put it on the desktop.  Can't access the download for HP Scan Extended.  I am not going to use Microsoft's HP Scan & Capture, because, frankly, it's awful.  The Printer Assistant worked wonderfully up until about a week ago, then the scanner stopped working.  I've rebooted everything - router, computer, printer, multiple times, to no avail.

This looks like an issue with the operating system and the printer driver.

Create a new user account on the computer and install the full-feature driver.

Let me know how this goes.
