Dear HP Support Team,

I am facing a recurring issue with my HP Scan app. Every time I open it, I get the message:
"Driver installation in progress. This may take a few hours."

This happens every day, and the process never seems to complete. I have tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times, but the problem still continues. As a result, I am unable to open or use the HP Scan app properly.

Steps I have already tried:

  1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the HP Scan software and printer drivers.

  2. Restarted my computer after installation.

  3. Checked for all available Windows and HP updates.

Despite these efforts, the issue remains the same.

I have attached two screenshots for your reference to help you better understand the problem.

Kindly look into this and advise how I can fix it.

Hi @CN366B203S

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m truly sorry this persistent driver installation message is blocking your ability to scan. You’ve already taken all the right steps, and I’ll guide you through a more complete fix to break the loop and restore full functionality.

When the HP Scan app repeatedly shows “Driver installation in progress,” it typically means the scan driver didn’t register correctly with Windows or is being blocked by background services.

Let’s walk through a clean reset that clears the stalled installation and rebuilds the scan environment.

Step-by-step actions to resolve the driver installation loop

Fully remove all HP software and drivers

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program
  • Uninstall everything related to HP (Scan app, printer software, support tools)
  • Restart your computer

Clear leftover driver files

  • Press Windows + R, type printui /s /t2, and press Enter
  • Remove any entries for your HP printer
  • Open Device Manager, expand Imaging Devices, and uninstall any HP scanner entries
  • Restart again

Reinstall using the HP App

  • Download the latest version of the HP App from the Microsoft Store:
    HP App – Microsoft Store
  • Open the app and add your printer
  • Wait for the app to install the scan components—this may take a few minutes but should not loop

Enable Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
  • Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and ensure it’s set to Automatic and is Running
  • If it’s stopped, right-click > Start

Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix tool

  • Download and run the tool from:
HP Diagnose & Fix – Windows
  • This tool checks for scan driver registration issues and repairs them automatically

Test scanning via Windows Fax and Scan

  • Press Windows + S, search for Windows Fax and Scan
  • Try scanning from there to confirm the driver is active

Let me know if the scan option remains unavailable after these steps or if the HP App doesn’t detect your printer—I’ll guide you through alternate scan methods or deeper registry-free resets.

You’ve been incredibly patient, and we’ll make sure your scanning experience is smooth and reliable again.
