I changed from the obsolete 7740 to the laser 4301. I like it well enough, but the scanner software stinks. The old version I could lay several photos on the flatbed at once and it would scan them, separate them, square them up and save them individually (and tie my shoes while it was at it). The scanner with the 4301 doesn't have this wonderful "detect" option under photos, and the old version got lost or was overwritten by the installation process for the 4301. I tried making a new shortcut for scanning and the option still isn't there. 

I have followed links all over the Inet for downloading "the real scanner software" and all I end up with is the same one I now have. 

It is also super large on the screen, taking up an unholy percentage of the screen, with no option to resize. 

What happened to the old scanner that worked so well? 

Is there anything I can do to get that version back again? 

I have followed several links to download "the full pack" (the usual answer is that "you must not be using the full package" and they give a link to dl it) but I just end up with the same thing I have, even if I uninstall the scanner first. It's ugly, takes a very long time to initialize and then won't do the clever photo scanning that was the primary reason I stayed with HP on getting this new printer in the first place. 

Any suggestions?
