HP Scan
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, where are scans temporarily saved - eg as each page is scanned from a document. I scanned important documents, hit save to save the new scanned document, posted the documents and returned to find the HP Scan software had crashed before the save completed. Where are the individual page scans temporarily saved please?

As soon as the software crashes, any data not already sent on its way or saved to disk is lost.

There is no "special holding folder" to save any unsaved scan data.

If you mean by "posted" that you used Scan-to-Email, then the data only existed while it was processed and sent to the email server.

Assuming that operation was successful, and in case you forgot to CC yourself, contact the recipient to send you a copy of the data he received.

If the operation was not successful, you will need to scan the documents again and send.

Worried that they will be lost again in transit?

Scan and save a copy of the data on your computer.

You can also use Webscan in your web browser to scan and then save the data onto your computer.

After the data is safely saved and you have the means to recover it later, then scan and send off the email or simply open your email and attached the saved documents.

References

Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

If the printer is on the network,

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > make sure Webscan is checked / enabled
  • Click Apply to save any changes

Next

  • Tab Scan > Webscan
  • Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF - Scan a test document using Webscan

Thanks Dragon-Fur, when I said post I meant old school posted into the mail! There's no chance to scan again, they were important and I was in a hurry to preserve a copy - but that's life.

It's disappointing that a temp version of each page is not kept until the whole scanned document is ready to save, especially as I can still see all 12 of the preview thumbnails in the user interface. After leaving it a couple of days to complete the save operation I pressed cancel to hopefully try to save again but now the cancel operation has been hanging for two days. It's annoying that I will have to force the program to close and lose the data while I can still see it on the screen, just not big enough to do anything with!

Thanks again.

You are welcome.

Usually works, but What If?

In my case, I always add a copy of the email to another address.

Yeah, but...

Even that may not be enough - if the data is not already safely saved somewhere you can easily retrieve it, you are still depending on the software to stay running long enough to complete all the tasks in the set - in this case, to scan and then email the results.

For the future, consider scan and save - then scan to email.

Yes, I know....

For everything?

Maybe not, but consider it for important documents or large jobs.

Crash is, by definition, a failure to complete the given task(s).

It is unfortunate - sometimes the Solution and Answer is No.
