I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-all-in-one printer. I use it on Windows 7. I have been scanning documents with as many as 45 pages. I use the HP Scan program that came with my 8600 to do it. The scanner works fine. as does the HP Scan software -- except that the software creates gigantic pdf files. The files happen to be old IRS and State income tax forms. In recent years I have been using the TurboTax software from Intuit and it creates PDF files for me. One of those PDF files contains 106 pages and takes up only 316 Kilobytes on my disk. Yet a 46 page document scanned through HP Scan takes up 15 Megabytes! 3 orders of magnitude bigger! Why. Is there a way to tell HP Scan to compress it output so it takes a more reasonable amount of disk space?

Thanks, -- Tim Dempsey

Hello clocktower2

In HP Scan there is a link to Advanced options and you should see a slider bar for file size. Set that to the smallest and also make sure you are scanning in Black and white or Grayscale for the smllest file sizes.

HI there, I am having a similar problem with my J4680.  It made large files on my pc and now on my mac air.  I don't see the slider bar you refer too on my mac, I haven't used my pc in a year.  Also, the scanning is different on my mac and doesn't allow me to scan more than one page at a time.  Can you help with this too?  Thank you! My mac Air is running 10.7.4 OS

Hello mikeb2012

I notice that there is no Full Feature Software for the Officejet J4680 under Mac OS Lion. Meaning the print and scanning is done within Mac OS.

Unfortunately I am not sure of a way to modify scan size using that method. You can try the following article to see if one of the scanning methods allow you to adjust file size.

How to Scan in Mac OS X 10.6 and OS X 10.7 without Using HP Software

I have a brand new HP8600 Plus,  plus I have an old HP 309

I scan the same document into each as a B&W copy A4.  The 8600 copy is FOUR times the size of the 309 copy,  and about one third the quality.

What is the problem ???    Thanks

Hello RET66,

I understand that you are experiencing a scanning quality issue with your Officejet 8600 Plus. I can help you out with this issue but I need to identify what operating system you have. Please click here to find out what operating system you have: Windows or MAC

How many documents are you trying to scan?

What kind of program are you scanning to (example PDF, OCR, JPEG)?

How long have you been experiencing this issue?

Please answer these questions, and I will be happy to answer your questions. Look forward to hearing from you.

I have just bought a LaserJet 200 Colour MFP M276n - running Win 8.1 on an ASUS labtop. The printer is connected via ethernet, but I have not been able to successfully install the HP software package as the installer fails during installation prepapration.

I have then tried using the HP Scan and Capture app which seems to work nicely, but now I am experincing this problem:

When I scan a single A4 page with text on the flatbed glass, the output is a PDF file of 180 kb, but when I scan the exact same A4 page with the same scanner settings, but using the ADF then the file output is a PDF file of 850 kb.

Can you help me with this issue?

Thx.

Thomas

Many thanks for the response - much appreciated

I am running Windows 7 Proff 64.

The number of documents varies  from a single sheet to 20 sheets

I am scanning to PDF

I pruchased the printer one week ago, and the problem has been there since the first scan

A single page even on the lowest setting in B&W takes at least 150 - 200 Kb,  but is then illegible -  to get a good readable scan,  the size needs to go to 300 - 400 K

By contrast , my old HP 309 creates a fabulous scan of the same document using less the 50K

With the 8600,   trying to email multi pages docs becomes difficult when they are many megabites

Appreciate any help you may offer
