Using a Mac with Monterrey OS and an HP 8720, when I attempt to scan using the scanner's input, the message, "Access Denied," "The user name or password is incorrect....."
I'm the only one that uses these machines and no one else has access to them nor are either on anything but a home network where I am the only user.
What do I do, please?

I understand you are facing a scan-related issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
If the app was downloaded from the Mac App Store, follow these steps:
Please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP Smart/containers. list and then launch HP Smart from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.
Update the printer firmware:
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.
- Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for any software updates on Mac: Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.
Download the latest version of the HP Smart app from the app store.
Install HP Smart App and try to scan: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142
You may go ahead and download and install the below software and try to scan
- For Mac Operating System: Download HP Easy Scan ( Reference Video: Scan from an HP Printer in macOS )
