HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow 5000 s2 L2738
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Problem:  When I open the HP Smart Document Scan Software 3.7.1, an error message displays:  "The HP smart Document Scan Software could not find your scanner."   I've demonstrated connectivity between my laptop and the scanner (see below).

I  have just connected a HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow 5000 s2 L2738 desktop scanner via USB to my Win 10 64bit laptop. I have installed the setup_SDSS_3-7-1.exe driver package that I downloaded from the HP driver page for the scanner.   I noticed that the  instructions for the SDSS  driver package say that the TWAIN Driver and Utilities are a pre-requisite, but there are no separate TWAIN Driver and Utilities files available for download.  Only the SDSS package is available on the download page.  So I was unable to install the TWAIN Driver and Utilities.  Elsewhere,  I did find a basic driver setup_basic_5000s2.exe which I installed after receiving the Smart Doc Scan SW error message, but it did not help.

I am able to execute a scan from the Windows Devices and Printers control panel page by selecting the HP Scanjet 5000 s2 device, right clicking and selecting "Start Scan" menu item.

I have also run the Test Scanner function from the device Scan Properties dialogue and it returns the Test Successful result :"Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test."  No other scanners or printers are powered on that the test could be talking to.

Success...

 - Deleted all drivers and SW packages that I had added since acquiring the scanner a few days ago.

 - Installed the TWAIN Driver and Utilities for 8.1/8/7/Vista/XP (32bit or 64bit) that I found on a driver website. I think it is the same as the Win 8.1 32 bit driver TWAIN Driver and Utilities 1.8 26.9 MB Jun 2, 2014) on the hp support (site at  https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-scanjet-enterprise-flow-5000-s2-sheet-feed-scann...

 -  Reinstalled the HP Smart Document Scan Software (Requires: TWAIN Driver and Utilities) 3.7.1 147.6 MB Apr 7, 2014

The SW identified the scanner and made all of its features enabled.

Do you happen to have a couple of different scanner software packages running? They could be conflicting with each other.

Good suggestion, RepairaTrooper.  I'll check right away.  I think the root problem may be that I do not have the TWAIN driver for the Scanjet 5000 S2.  When I  tried installing the TWAIN driver for the HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow 7000 S2, which is posted on the HP support page, the software identified the Scanjet 5000 S2.  However, the software did not provide further functionality (scan button was grayed out.)

Can you point me to the TWAIN driver for HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow 5000 S2?

Here's what I see running per Task Manager that may be associated with scan software:

1.  HP Laserjet Service running for my MFP1536 printer  Also,

2.  HP Software Framework WMI Service

3.  HP Support Solutions Framework Service (installed for troubleshooting

4.  HP WMI Service (32 bit)

5. HPTLBXFX (32 bit)

6. Service Host:  Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

I'll try killing the WIA and HPTLBXFX processes and let you know if there is any effect.

Thanks,

Killed the HPTLBXFX (32 bit) with no effect.

Started to kill the WIA service host, but there was a warning that ending the process would make Windows unstable or shut down, so I left it running.

Current status is that the HP Doc Scan SW starts up and recognizes the Scanjet 5000 S2, but the Scan button is grayed out.

I'm open to additional suggestions.

Thanks,
