HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner
Microsoft Windows 11

I have Windows 11 Home, Version 23H2, OS version 22631.3296

My HP Scanjet G4050, Product No L1957A, stopped working fully a while ago. The PDF button on top stopped to work, but the button for scanning photos worked. On this community I found a description to download a new driver. It was written by Mans 01-20-2022 as an answer to a question by HansHG. I followed the instructions:

I downloaded the driver setup_full_G4000.exe (file version 4.1.100.1332).

I selected to run this program in compatibility mode and selected Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

I ran the file setup_full_G4000.exe as an administrator.

I selected the installation alternative "Recommended" and then selected the alternative "Rapid heating of the lamp". After the installation I restarted the computer.

I clicked the PDF button on the scanner (later I tested the three remaining buttons with the same result as for the PDF button) and got the error message (translated from Swedish):

The HP scanning software may not be able to scan to the default destination because the required software is not available or is not working properly. Choose one of the following options:

o Troubleshoot this issue now and try scanning again later.

o Complete this scan now and troubleshoot the problem another time. Note If you select this option, select the location to save the file and file type on the next screen to complete the scan .

I selected the first option and the scanning window appeared:

I selected “Document to file” and “Scan”. An error message appeared:

“A required software component is missing or has been installed incorrectly. Reinstall the HP Photosmart software that came with the device, and then try scanning again.”

Error info: 8,[4,-2146959355,0)]

I got the same result if I selected the option “Complete this scan now”.

So, now I cannot scan at all. Thus, the update of the installation was a mistake.

Now, what can I do?

The basic scanner driver is below and all other HP software  is here.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL53014/dp-127898-3/setup_basic_G4050_14_5_0_1.exe

This is the minimum driver required for basic WIA functionality. This driver enables scanning with the Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista /Win7 or the Scanner and Camera Wizard on Windows XP or scan app in Win8/Win10. Scanning can also be done with a variety of 3rd party scanner enabled applications.

It should work with HP Smart as I believe that is what "scan" refers to.

There is a 3rd party solution or older scanner but it requires a license after the trial period
HP ScanJet G4050 Scanner Driver & Software | VueScan Scanner Software (hamrick.com)

If it works better then the basic HP scanner it might be worth it.

Thank you for the quick answer BeemerBiker.

I downloaded the file setup_basic_G4050_14_5_0_1.exe and ran it. Started the scanner with a button on top of it. Unfortunately with the same result as before.

Now, I do not know what you mean with the sentence "This driver enables scanning with the Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista /Win7 or the Scanner and Camera Wizard on Windows XP or scan app in Win8/Win10". I have Windows 11. Is there a windows program I can download and use with my HP scanner and if so, how do I do?

I have tried VueScan. It works for scanning pdf's and images, but not for scanning slides.

I just copied that from the website that had the drivers.

I would contact that company and ask them about slides.  AFAICT they reversed engineered those older drivers to make them work in newer versions of windows.  If the driver does not work with the slide attachment device or feeder they may have some advice.

I had an old scanner and their software was able to make the feeder work properly but I found a used scanner at goodwill that cost less than their license.

Thanks for the answer. I will contact VueScan. Still, I hope to get a solution to the problem of using drivers from HP.
