I have been trying to get my old Scanjet G4050 photo and slide scanner to work with the hardware dust and scratch removal option on. It throws an error however saying that "The scans cannot be properly aligned." I have spent the last couple weeks messing with it trying to get it to work. Yes, I have the correct template in the scanning bed and, yes, the TWAIN cable is properly connected and tightened down. I believe the issue is in the infrared scanning bulb. It does not appear to turn on when the scanner makes it second pass. Using the front camera on my iPhone and opening the scanner lid, I have noted that the scanning bar on the lid remains dark when it is making its second pass. (The front 'selfie' camera on my iPhone lacks an infrared filter and allows me to see infrared light sources. You can test this with your phone by using a tv remote.)

 

Has anyone ever had a similar issue? The six color scanning setting works fine on my scanner so I know it's not an alignment issue. I am thinking about taking my scanner apart to see if maybe the infrared bulb is loose or something simple like that, but I wanted to ask on here to see if anyone has any ideas. Also does anyone know if it is even possible to take the top scanning light assembly apart? If not, is there anywhere I can easily get a replacement? I know I can on ebay, but I was hoping maybe I could get something offical from HP.
