I have a HP ENVY 7640 all in one printer where I use HP Smart on my IMAC. When I scan a document, HP Smart does not give me the ability to save, edit, print. The menu is greyed out and I cannot access it. I am using OS Monterey v 12.7.4. The version for HP Smart is v 17.11.1. I have removed HP Smart and reinstalled it and I have the same issue. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi @Marine1949,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with the issue of a greyed-out menu in HP Smart when you're trying to scan documents. Here are some steps and checks you might consider to help resolve this issue:
Check for Updates: You've mentioned you're using HP Smart v17.11.1. It's a good practice to ensure both your operating system and the HP Smart app are up to date. Sometimes, bugs are fixed in newer versions of the software.
Permissions Check: On macOS Monterey, it's essential to ensure that HP Smart has the necessary permissions to access your files and folders. You can check and modify these settings in your System Preferences:
- Open System Preferences.
- Go to Security & Privacy.
- Click the Privacy tab.
- Select Files and Folders and see if HP Smart is listed and enabled. Also, check the Accessibility section to ensure HP Smart has the permissions it needs.
Printer Driver and Software: Beyond the HP Smart app, ensure that your printer's drivers are up to date:
- Visit the HP Support website.
- Enter your printer model (HP ENVY 7640).
- Download and install the latest drivers and software available for macOS Monterey.
Reset Printer System:
- Sometimes, resetting the printer system can help resolve persistent issues.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click in the list of devices and choose Reset printing system.
- After resetting, add your printer again and try using HP Smart.
Alternate Software: If HP Smart continues to be problematic, consider using another software for scanning purposes like the built-in Image Capture app on your Mac, which might offer basic functionality without the need for additional software.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel571,
Thank you for getting back with me. I spoke with HP Support this morning and my printer is old and isn’t compatible with the HP Smart v17.11.1, thus they are not able to communicate. I was already signed up with HP Ink, so I have upgraded my printer to a HP OfficeJet Pro 9010e that is just $6.99 more than what I was already paying. I do appreciate your post and thank you for explaining things to me. I appreciate it very much.
