HP OfficeJet 5258 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My specific issue is with the scanner's 'editing function' in HP Smart. It crashes after I edit the 1st page scanned. I suspect a software module issue, as the edit button changes its appearance and will not activate this function, although it still scans  'added' documents. This all started recently when HP auto-downloaded an update for my printer. Since then I've had issues with the scanner, specifically, I need to use the printer's wireless connection or it doesn't 'see' the scanner, although it used to work through the printer's USB connection before this.  Closing & reopening HP Smart did not correct the issue. Downloading the application again from the Microsoft store didn't correct the issue. HP Scan doctor doesn't see the scanner at all.

Hi @Giorgio19,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the recent update might have caused compatibility issues with the HP Smart app and the scanner on your HP OfficeJet 5258 All-In-One Printer. Let's try a few troubleshooting steps to resolve this problem.

Uninstall HP Smart and Reinstall:

  • Uninstall the HP Smart app completely from your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and install the latest version of HP Smart from the Microsoft Store again.

Check for Printer Firmware Updates:

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or on the HP support website.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet, and wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the printer and the wall outlet, and turn on the printer.

Check Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Install the Full Feature Software and Drivers:

  • Go to the HP support website and download the full feature software and drivers for your HP OfficeJet 5258 printer.
  • Install the software and drivers, and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Although you mentioned that HP Print and Scan Doctor doesn't see the scanner, try running it again after reinstalling the drivers. Sometimes, a second attempt can yield different results.

Alternative Scanning Software:

  • If HP Smart continues to crash, try using alternative scanning software such as Windows Fax and Scan, or third-party scanning software like NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2).

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the scanning issues with your HP OfficeJet 5258 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
