HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

Printer is always offline through the smart app.  Currently, I am unable to scan.  Ran diagnostics, states no issues.  Did test print and it worked, yet its still offline and will not scan.  All the lights blink constantly and I have to unplug the printer, then plug it back in and restart.  I spend way too much time trying to fix issue with this printer,  and I am ready to just chunk it and purchase a different brand.

Hi @mmahan131

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how discouraging it feels to see the printer work for test prints but remain offline in the HP App, especially when scanning is blocked and the lights keep blinking.

You’ve already put in a lot of effort, so let’s go through a structured set of checks that can help stabilize the connection and bring scanning back.

Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the rear.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord back in and power on the printer.
  • This clears temporary states that can cause blinking lights and offline status.

Restore Network Connection

  • On the printer’s control panel, press and hold the Wireless button until the Wireless light blinks.
  • This puts the printer back into Wi-Fi setup mode.
  • Open the HP App on your Windows 11 PC and select “Add Printer.”
  • Follow the prompts to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

Check Router Band

  • Ensure the printer is connecting to the 2.4 GHz band of your router, as it does not support 5 GHz.
  • If your router uses a combined SSID for both bands, try splitting them temporarily and connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band.

Update Firmware

  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter “HP Smart Tank 7301” and install the latest firmware update available.
  • Firmware refresh often resolves blinking light and offline issues.

Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • Open the HP App on your PC.
  • Select your printer, go to “Printer Settings,” then choose “Diagnose & Fix.”
  • This tool automatically checks for and resolves connectivity and scanning issues.

Manual IP Connection

  • Print a Network Configuration Page by pressing the Information button on the printer.
  • Note the IP address listed.
  • In the HP App, choose “Add Printer by IP address” and enter the IP manually.

Test Scanning

  • Once the printer shows online in the HP App, try scanning from the app.
  • If scanning works here, the issue was purely connection-related.

The key is to reset the printer into Wi-Fi setup mode, ensure it’s on the correct band, and refresh firmware so the HP App can recognize it consistently. Once the connection stabilizes, scanning should respond normally without needing to unplug and restart each time.
