If you're experiencing issues with getting a dial tone on your HP Smart Tank 7602 when trying to send a fax, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Check Phone Cord Connection:

  • Ensure that the phone cord is securely connected between the telephone wall jack and the port labeled "1-LINE" on the back of the printer.
  • If you are using a phone splitter, remove it and directly connect the printer to the telephone wall jack as splitters can cause faxing problems.

Verify Phone Line:

  • Connect a working phone directly to the telephone wall jack used for the printer. Check for a dial tone. If there is none, contact your telephone company to check the line.

Testing Fax Setup:

  • Use the printer control panel to run a fax test. This will check the status of the printer’s fax line setup and provide a report on the test results.
  • Ensure you haven't incorrectly set the country/region setting, as this could cause the test to fail.

Dial Tone Detection Test:

  • If other equipment is using the same phone line as the printer, it might cause the test to fail. Disconnect everything from the phone line and run the test again.

Analog Phone Line Requirement:

  • Make sure you're connected to an analog phone line. Connect a regular analog phone to check for a standard dial tone.

Additional Equipment:

  • If your printer shares the phone line with a DSL service, ensure you have a DSL filter installed. Poor sound quality from the phone line (noise) can affect fax function.
