Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

I have been using HP Smart to scan documents from my HP laserjet pro MFP M180nw printer for years.  Now I'm getting an error message stating the app is incompatible with my printer.  There was also an early message about using 5G wifi vs 2.4G wifi.  Can you help me figure out why I can't use HP Smart to scan anymore?  Thanks

Hi @ETW999,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're encountering compatibility issues with the HP Smart app and your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M180nw printer. Here are a few steps and considerations that might help resolve the issue:

  • Check for Updates: Ensure both the HP Smart app on your device (whether it's a smartphone, tablet, or computer) and your printer have the latest firmware and software updates installed. Sometimes, updating these can resolve compatibility issues.
  • WiFi Network: The message about 5GHz vs 2.4GHz WiFi might be important. Some HP printers and apps might have compatibility preferences or requirements for WiFi frequency. The M180nw typically supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands, but for consistent connection, especially for scanning and printing, it's often recommended to use the 2.4GHz band as it typically offers better range and stability over longer distances.
  • App Compatibility: Confirm that the HP Smart app you're using is indeed the correct one for your printer model. Sometimes there are different versions or updates specific to certain printer models. You might want to check the app store or HP's website for any specific instructions or compatibility updates related to your printer.
  • Alternative Scanning Methods: If HP Smart continues to show compatibility issues, you can also consider using alternative scanning methods. Most HP printers, including the M180nw, have a web interface that allows scanning directly to a computer over the network. You can access this by entering your printer's IP address into a web browser. From there, you can initiate scans and manage scanning settings.
