Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M2777
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This printer was installed in 2015 and the HP Smart app worked fine until this last month. If I try to bring up the HP Smart window to initiate a scan it spins for a while then says "... can't load HP Smart right now.... try again later". But it never works. If I try to use the window on the printer to "scan to my laptop", the function also spins for a while then says "computer not responding". Any suggestions to restore this functionality? Thanks.

@duh_knee, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Smart app not working!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and restore the scanning functionality for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277 on Windows 10 (64-bit):

Restart Devices

  • Restart your printer, laptop, and Wi-Fi router.
  • After restarting, wait for all devices to reconnect properly.

Check Connection Status

  1. On your printer, go to Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Settings (if using Wi-Fi).
  2. Ensure the printer shows Connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  3. On your laptop, confirm it’s connected to the same network as the printer.

Reinstall HP Smart App

  1. Uninstall HP Smart from your computer:
    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Programs and Features) and uninstall HP Smart.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Download the latest version of HP Smart from the Microsoft Store or HP’s official website.
  4. Open HP Smart and sign in with your HP account.

Reset HP Print and Scan Settings

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on your printer and select Remove device.
  3. Reinstall the printer:
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Add a printer or scanner.
    • Let Windows detect the printer and follow the prompts to install it.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP support website.
  2. Open the tool and follow the instructions to detect and fix any issues with the scanner.

Enable Scan to Computer

  1. Open the HP Smart app.
  2. Go to Settings > Printer Settings > Scan Settings > Scan to Computer.
  3. Turn on Enable Scan to Computer.

Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings

  • Ensure your firewall or antivirus isn’t blocking the HP Smart app.
  • Add HP Smart as an exception in your firewall/antivirus settings.

Final Test:

  • Try scanning using both the HP Smart app and the printer’s control panel.
  • If the issue persists, try connecting the printer using a USB cable to isolate whether it's a network issue.

I hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
