Product: HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer

this morning my HP Smart gives an error that it "couldn't connect to scanner".  I am connected from my laptop to the scanner with a USB cable.  My scanner can communicate back to the laptop because I can scan on the printer and tell it to send the file to my laptop.   I have restarted my computer, unplugged the printer, ...  what else can I do to get the SCAN feature on HP Smart working again?
