HP Smart for scanning

My 3-year product warranty ran out in July.  I find I now can't use HP Smart for scanning and I understand from the HP website that the HP app replaces HP Smart.  The website says I have to download the HP app for Android (I'm using a Lenovo laptop) which I'm supposed to be able to access from the Google Play Store but I'm having difficulty.  Can I just download any old scanning app to my laptop?

You’re absolutely right: HP Smart has been replaced by the HP App, and that’s the key to restoring your scanning functionality.

 

Here’s What You Can Do on Your Lenovo Laptop (Windows 11)

1. Download the HP App for Windows—not Android The HP App is available directly from the Microsoft Store for Windows PCs.

• Visit: HP App – Microsoft Store
• Click Get to install it on your Lenovo laptop
• Once installed, open the app and select your printer
• Go to Scan > Scanner > Document Feeder or Flatbed
• Use the Add Page option for multi-page scans and save as PDF

 

2. Avoid Using Android or Google Play Store

Since you’re on a Windows laptop, you don’t need the Android version. The Google Play Store is only for mobile devices—your Lenovo laptop should use the Microsoft Store instead.

 

3. Can You Use Other Scanning Apps?

Yes, but they may not support all HP features like multi-page scanning, OCR, or direct cloud save. If you choose to try alternatives:

• Windows Fax and Scan (built-in)
• NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2) – free and lightweight
• VueScan – paid, but supports a wide range of scanners

However, for full compatibility and ease of use, the HP App is the best choice.
