HP Smart forces to setup an online account to scan a document locally!

So in order to scan a document from the scanner to the PC I launched HP Smart then clicked Scan. I expected to be able to scan a document but to my utter surprise I was presented with a menu with three choices: Create Account, Sing In or Close. Why in the world would I want to opt into some online account if all I want to do is scan locally? Why did you not put this in big bold letters on your product description so that I could have avoided buying into your surveillance system HP?! This really sucks donkeys.

The alternative is to scan to a USB stick on the printer/scanner front panel and then copy to the PC or use Windows Fax and Scan software.

There are no donkeys involved.

HP Smart - the application - is free - no purchase.

Using the application is optional in most cases.

Caveat:  Available software / applications are dependent on the Printer and the Operating System / version.

There is no odd or secret surveillance - see the section in the application.

HP Smart > Settings gear (lower left corner) > Privacy Settings

If you don't want to use the app, use something else instead.

For example, assuming your printer supports it,

• Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software and use HP Scan
• If the Full Feature Software is (already) installed, install and use the HP Scan and Capture application
• Install and use Windows Scan app
• Use Windows Fax and Scan

HP Smart application - supports printing and scanning PDF and Photos / Images.  HP Smart is supported in many regions and on many newer networked printers - The app is available from the  Microsoft Store . HP Smart requires that you sign in using your HP Account credentials. HP Smart benefits when the full driver printer software is also installed.

HP Smart Printing – When supported, “Smart Printing” is an installed HP Smart driver option in the printer list. Access HP Smart Printing when choosing the Printer to be used in the current job setup. Example: Open HP Smart > Open the content to be printed > Printer (list – top left of menu) > Select HP Smart Printing -- Note – HP Smart Printing supports Custom Presets (Shortcuts) and printing in Word.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant and HP Scan. If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

HPUS installs a new, full featured, (and separate) HP Scan software shortcut to the Desktop.
