I am using HP Smart 138.1.407.0 on Windows 11.

1. Do I need to check for newer versions of HP Smart periodically, or is it updated automatically?

2. I am scanning two pages with Auto-Enhancements enabled, Presets set to Document, Scan Area set to Letter, Output set to Gray, and Resolution set to 150 dpi, and save them as a PDF. When I use the Document Feeder, the PDF size is 1887KB, but when I use manual scan, the PDF size is 1086KB. Why is there such a big difference?

3. The only choices for Output are Color and Gray. Is there a Black and White choice I'm not seeing? That would be very useful.

Thank you!

Store - HP Smart - Updates

Latest version at this writing - just updated to 138.2.412.0

Manual App check / update

Open

Microsoft Store

Check your Library > "Get Updates"

The store used to offer settings for automatic update control in the app - a while ago, these features disappeared.

At least in Windows 11, the options (such as they are) have been moved out of the Store app proper and into the Settings for the application.

In Windows 11,

Open Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Find Microsoft Store in the list of apps > Click to open Advanced Options (three vertical dots at right)

In Section "Background apps permissions"

Select which option you want  -- Not sure?  Click on "Learn more about the options"

===================================================================================

Scan Size Difference

Actual DPI might be slightly higher than selected.

No, I don't know why else there is a difference (in this case of 801KB).

===================================================================================

Color Choices

Open HP Smart

Select Scan

Set Presets as you want - color or grayscale inclusive in the setup

Scan the content

After the Scan > Select to Edit the scanned content

Select Filters

Select B/W2

Click Done

Complete the job > Select Print / Save / Share / Shortcuts / Fax

Partial Example - HP Smart - Windows - Scan > Edit > Filters

HP_Smart_W10_Scan_Edit_Image_Set_10HP_Smart_W10_Scan_Edit_Image_Set_10

Hello @Dragon-Fur, I arrived here while searching for the actual version number of the Windows Metro app version. You confirmed that I had the last one installed, just automatically updated by Windows: "Latest version at this writing - just updated to 138.2.412.0".

I am quite sure that I read yesterday on this site in a article from HP that the current Windows version is 12. I can't retrieve that page in my browsing history so I might have misread that information. Can you please confirm if there is an alternate version numbering of Windows version or if this rounded "12" version number relates to another Windows environment. Or if I simply misread some HP information about the current version of HP Smart for Windows.

Thanks for you help.

How to find the application version

Open HP Smart > App Settings (gear) > About
