HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus prints ok from my iMac and I was able to scan using HP Smart but now I can't scan and get this message:
Feature Unavailable
This feature is not supported by the selected printer. Connect to a different printer to use this feature.
How do I fix this?

Hi @DaveH50 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue you’re experiencing often occurs due to software conflicts, app updates, or a change in printer settings. Here are steps to resolve the problem:
1. Check Printer Compatibility with HP Smart
- Ensure your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus supports scanning with the HP Smart app. While it usually does, firmware updates or app versions might introduce compatibility issues.
2. Restart Devices
- Restart the printer.
- Restart your iMac.
- Restart your router to ensure a stable network connection.
3. Re-add Printer in HP Smart HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
- Open the HP Smart app on your iMac.
- Remove the printer:
- Click the printer's name.
- Select Remove Printer.
- Re-add the printer:
- Click the Add Printer button.
- Follow the instructions to reconnect the printer.
4. Ensure the Printer is Fully Updated
- On the printer's control panel:
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- Allow any firmware updates to complete.
5. Enable Scan Services
- Log into the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer's settings.
- Note the printer’s IP address.
- Enter the IP address in a web browser on your iMac.
- Navigate to Settings > Security > Webscan and ensure it’s enabled.
6. Reinstall HP Smart App
- Delete the HP Smart app from your iMac.
- Reinstall the app from the Mac App Store.
- Add your printer back to the app.
7. Try Using an Alternate Scanning Method
- Open Preview on your iMac.
- Go to File > Import from Scanner > HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus.
- Test if scanning works through this method.
8. Reset the Printer System on macOS
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click in the printers list and choose Reset Printing System.
- Re-add your printer and test scanning again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
