Hi @CodyP

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here’s how you can scan documents with your HP Officejet Pro 805 All‑in‑One using the HP App on Windows, and then convert them into an editable format like DOC:

  1. Open the HP App on your Windows computer.
  2. Select “Scan” from the home screen.
  3. Place your document on the scanner glass or in the document feeder.
  4. Choose PDF as the file type and complete the scan.
    • The HP App currently supports saving scans directly as PDF or image formats.
  5. Once the PDF is saved, open it in Microsoft Word.
    • In Word, go to File > Open, select the scanned PDF, and Word will automatically convert it into an editable DOC/DOCX file.
  6. Review the converted document, make any necessary edits, and then save it in DOC or DOCX format.

This workflow ensures you can scan with the HP App and still achieve an editable Word document. The conversion step is handled smoothly within Microsoft Word, giving you flexibility to edit and save in the format you prefer.

Would you like me to also outline how to use OCR features in Windows to improve text recognition during the conversion process?

I understand that Word is supposed to be able to convert the PDF file, but I have tried that on several PDFs in recent days, and I do not receive anything close to an editable Word document. Sometimes pages are hacked to pieces, sometimes the entire page is shifted to the right and half of it goes outside the margin, sometimes they are converted to pictures, and sometimes I get nothing in the middle of the document. So no, this solution is not working on the PDF files I have.

The other part of my question is why am I forced to take this extra step anyway? Why doesn't HP so-called "Smart" app give me the option of scanning an obvious text document directly into Word?

Thanks for getting back to us @CodyP

The HP App is designed to scan documents into PDF or image formats only. It does not provide a direct option to scan into Word (DOC/DOCX). That’s why you’re seeing the extra conversion step.

If the conversion in Word is producing poor results, here are some steps you can take to improve accuracy and reduce formatting issues:

Use the Document Feeder or Flatbed Carefully

  • Place pages neatly in the feeder or align them properly on the glass.
  • Ensure the document is straight to avoid skewed scans.

Adjust Scan Settings in the HP App

  • Select Scan > Settings before scanning.
  • Choose Text (OCR) or High Resolution (300 dpi or higher).
  • Higher resolution improves text recognition when converting later.

Save as PDF, Then Convert with OCR Tools

  • After scanning to PDF, instead of opening directly in Word, use an OCR tool (built into Windows or third‑party software) to extract text.
  • This produces cleaner, editable text compared to Word’s direct PDF import.

Open in Word After OCR

  • Once OCR has processed the PDF, open the file in Word.
  • The text should now be editable with fewer layout problems.

To summarize: the HP App is limited to PDF/image output, so the conversion step is unavoidable. The key to better results is scanning at higher resolution and using OCR before opening in Word. This workflow ensures you get a properly editable document instead of fragmented or image‑based pages.
