HP laserjet MPF M28w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Laserjet MPF-M28w printer. Printing and scanning are looking to be ok from laptop (wireless). BUT Problem when connected from desktop with USB. The scanner app (HP smart) does not work properly and freezes all the time after first page which can only be saved, no editing works, and scan is in JPEG  only. E.g. can scans only one page to JPG (not pdf and can't change - haven't found any place where this could be changed), the app then freezes after one page (can only kill thsi via task manager, so really bad behaving app. And cannot edit scans. e.g. straighten would be nice (no reaction to edit button).

HP scan programs seems to work ok, but the program shows only a small window in a 4K screen (not scalable), so hard to use.

Basic question is that is HP snart at all designed to work via USB connection to scanner ? - If not not very happy because of the small window of HP scan. And from laptop it is nice to do small editing right away (wireless connection). However can't use it all the time.

You can believe I have made a clean install many times... to an well managed and updated win10 computer. From diffrenet USB ports because on complaint has bee the port (they all are good in my computer). And scan doctor doses not provide any help for HP smart which the recommended app from HP installation file.. (scan doctor reports other things to be ok).

So any help appreciated. I like this small device at home, and nice features (if all works), so I would like to keep it.

HP Smart presumably works with USB - I've not seen this, but the documentation says it will do so.

HP Smart for Windows

HP Smart is an application available in the Microsoft Store

Learn how to use HP Smart on your Windows 10 computer.

Open the Software and Drivers Support Website for your printer > Check the Box Get the App

OR

HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

NOTES:

  • Website includes the HP Smart software for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues
  • Latest versions of HP Smart require that you be signed into the application

HP Scan (part of the Full Driver software) is probably not written to support very high screen resolutions.  Reloading the software won't fix this limitation.

What else?

Try / Consider

Various Software / Applications for Scan

Windows Scan – Microsoft Store (formally Windows Store) - Requires Windows 8 or higher

and...

Programs / Software like  Paint (mspaint) can be used to scan.

and...

NAPS2 – “Not Another PDF Scanner”

  • Download-Save-Install >  NAPS2
  • Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
  • Includes an OCR feature – may need Ghostscript add-on (See NAPS2 forum entry)
  • Read the Support pages for information
  • Download, save, and install the NAPS2 software to use.

and...

HP Scan and Capture - Microsoft Store (formally Windows Store) - Requires Windows 8 or higher

Example

Scan_and_Capture_Document-Photo_Settings_1Scan_and_Capture_Document-Photo_Settings_1Scan_and_Capture_PreferencesScan_and_Capture_Preferences

The following might work - I cannot test (no LaserJet printer)

At the least, it is nice software and worth a look...

What else?

Irfanview requires installation of third party software

Irfanview > Brilliant Free Photo Viewing and Print Software

Irfanview provides an exceptional software experience that can be used for a variety of scan and print tasks, including the “Mirror” or horizontal flip function plus several other options not found elsewhere.

  • Create a Restore Point (optional, recommended)
  • Download the appropriate version (32bit or 64bit) of the program from the Website and install the program
  • Additional information at the website, including:  FAQ

NOTES

  • Both 32bit and 64bit versions for Windows are available.
  • Irfanview is also available as an Windows 10 Application from the Microsoft Store

For example,

Irfanview 64bit version – Information and Download

Software and All Plugins for 64bit version:  https://www.fosshub.com/IrfanView.html

Includes Plugin for creating Multiple-page PDF files for images (Poster or large paper printing)

Includes access (where available) to Scan with HP Twain > Adjust settings > Save

How to find Help within the Irfanview software

Once installed, open the software > tab Help

Example help entry:

Vertical/Horizontal Flip

  • Click on the Image Menu, then Vertical Flip. The image will turn upside-down. The left/right orientation will stay the same.
  • Click on the Image Menu, then Horizontal Flip. The image will turn side-to-side, as in a mirror.

Note: The effect can be used on a smaller portion (rectangle selection) of an image, as well as the entire image.

OK, checked on these items, I did not realize HP smart app was also available from MS store. But new download and install did not help unfortunately.  If somewhere available I could try different (older) versions of HP smart. At least for now no need for the special functionality, except scanning. The main problem seems to be that somehow HP smart does not work. The new versions also lack camera as import which I have in the laptop (there I had from last summer HP MPF28a, only usb connection, and have been using that sw). Thus it may have a different app (did not find sw version codes..), so is there a possiblity that the potentially newer version has a bug in this area ?

I have allowed HP all data, signed in to HP etc, but haven’t found a way to find printer claim code (although it should not be required). Is it available to this printer ? Also signing in to Google does not work as expected, it says printing the claim sheet (or eqv), but nothing comes out and there is no info on the screen (also in my laptop where scan is ok).

I  checked the wirelessly connected laptop for items mentioned in the instructions documents (from laptop, scanning and editing scanned pictures using HP Smart works OK). Could not find anything  different, same version of software and updated win10 in both.

Then I converted the connection from my desktop to the printer to wireless (Ethernet from desktop to router). Printing ok, but did not help to scanning. There is story about claim your code and instructions how to find it. I went through all the menus carefully and could not find the name mentioned "web services" at all to enable it (which is prequisite to get the code..). Looks like there are errors in the tutorial documention (or missing items in set-up menus) or bugs in the software so that at least in same cases things simply don't work..

It is pitty that HP scan is made with code where window is not scalable, that would be ok. I understand there are other sw to do many things, but I’d like to keep things simple for other members of the family to get work done without big hassle.

Waiting if someone gets a solution

And by the way. HP smart in my desktop scans only to jpeg, and haven't found a place where this could be configured to pdf. Maybe this rings the bell for someone to find the solution.

And another comment: Scanner in the device works, and from HP smart I can scan one page and save it. But it is not possible to edit it (the edit buttton does not respond), and I can go back. The app just  freezes.

I connected the printer via Ethernet (from desktop to router) - WiFi. The small trick here is when creating the connection is to choose first WiFi (although there is no WiFi in the desktop), and then choose Ethernet > Wifi. And I had to work starting from Windows control panel where the network printer already was, but not associated with the app. And should be logically as wireless from the laptop (there connection laptop to router is wireless instead of cable).

So connection from desktop is Ethernet and then WiFi from router  to the printer, no USB cable.

The interesting thing is that having done like this the scan output comes as pdf ! not jpeg as from usb connected ( I wish there would be a configuration utility to explore options, but there isn't).  But still the HP smart app behaves as earlier, no editing possible, and scans only one page - so basically not usable.

I'd really like to get the exact same as as there is in the laptop, but might have come only on CD with the prvious no wireless model summer 2020, and that is now gone..

I wish to HP (among other things) would be to tell the logic of what is connected to what: e.g. contropl panel printer - HP Smart App associations, and network connection logic. Guided setup is sometimes a little misleading and have to try different routes. If things go fine very fast and easy, if not takes a lot of time.

So if anyone can advice where to get some older HP Smart apps, I am happy to try - HP staff ?

Cheers ,

Jouko

More of HP Smart app.

Windows 10 control panel reports the version to be the same = 122.1.778.0 in both of my computers. But they behave in a different way. Windows reports the app size to be 162 MB in my laptop (that works for scanning also), but it is clearly smaller = 101 MB in the desktop that has the problem. Has HP left out something and kept the same version number. Sounds like a  not good way of doing things if this is the case.

So I am  more specifically looking for HP Smart version 122.1.778.0, app size 162 MB. Does HP have this somewhere available as an installation package *
