Photosmart C-4440
Microsoft Windows XP

Thanks in advance for the help. I have a Dell Dimension 4600i Windows XP computer that I am trying to use with an HP Photosmart c-4440 A-I-O printer. (I also have a windows 10 computer at my other home before someone is tempted to just tell me to get a new rig. The 4600i and the photosmart otherwise work just fine.)

OK. Down to the problem. After I installed the C-440 the first time and tried to scan I got error code 1706:"Error 1706. No valid source cvould be found for product scan. The Windows Installer cannot continue". (Trying to use the scan button tells me to scan using my computer).

So I tried some solutions, downloading online scan.msi file from HP and it would not install on my computer. Tried to do this from the disk (using explore). Double clicked scan.msi and that did not work. A box opened up on my computer for about 1/4 of a second.

So I thought I would try to create a path for scan.msi. Went to C:\program files\HP and created a folder I named scan and dragged a copy of scan.msi into it (that I copied off the HP install disk).

Then I stopped getting 1706 and started getting error code 1311: "Source file not found: C:\Program Files\HP\Scan\Scan.cab. Verify that the fike exists and that you can access it."

Now here is the wierd part. If I retry about 5 times to scan after the 1311 error, then try to cancel about 5 times, suddenly the printer starts scanning and I get a page giving me file options (pdf is already highlighted) and I can click scan then click OK and my document is scanned and I have an accessable copy of it on my PC.

Does HP finally have a sure fire fix for this problem? Is the problem my PC? Thanks.

Dear rb011,

We solved the problem.   Working from the support document link that you gave me I found partial success with option #2.  At first it did not work as I got a message, something like "The function you are trying to use is on a network"  when I tried to scan.

So I went to my C: drive and under HP in Program Files and I created a new folder which I named "Scan".  I then went to the hpdisk file I created and I copied all the scan.cab files and scan.msi (found under setup in a scan folder).  These I pasted in "My own" "Scan" folder.

Now I can scan without error messages.  My computer takes awhile to "think" before scanning starts (the green bar has to go from left to right several times while it is "retrieving information").  But I will take that vs. error messages.

Intersting that the install process did not create a scan folder on my computer.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi @tyrogyro,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums for a solution to your scanning issue.

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart C4440 All-in-One Printer that you are unable to scan to one of your Windows computers. I would likle to help.

I want to be sure that I am completely understanding what is going on.

You mentions that the Windows XP computer and the printer work just fine. Does that mean that you are having the issues on the Windows 10 computer?

Were you actuallaly able to completely install the software on the computer in question?

I will watch for your reply so I can look into this further for you. Please reply at your convenience.

Thanks!

Thanks rb011.  No problem with the windows 10 computer.  I am using a brother printer with that one.

I GUESS I am not able to completely install the HP software on to the XP computer; that is install the file scan.msi.

I did place a copy of that file on my XP but the computer does not seem to be using it.  Wrong pathway? Or it is just not opening the file and using it?  I could not get the file to install when I simply double clicked on it when I found the file on the HP install disk.
