Scanning worked for Readisis and Quicken for years until about 1 week ago.  The only change was a Windows update also I changed from AT&T to Spectrum modem but kept my router and WiFi .  Both my laptop and desktop have the same problem.  HP Scan Doctor says everything works OK.

Hi @Rickv757

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like the Windows update or network change may have affected the way Readiris and Quicken recognize your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M281 scanner. Since HP Scan Doctor confirms the scanner is working, the issue likely lies with third-party software compatibility

Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

1. Reinstall Readiris and Quicken

  • Uninstall Readiris and Quicken from Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and reinstall the latest versions:
    • Readiris for HP: Download here.
    • Quicken: Visit the official Quicken support page.

2. Check Scanner Settings in Readiris and Quicken

  • Open Readiris and go to Settings > Scanner Selection.
  • Ensure your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M281 is selected as the default scanner.
  • Repeat the same steps in Quicken.

3. Verify Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) Service

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click and select Restart.
  • Set Startup Type to Automatic.

4. Update HP Printer Drivers

  • Visit the HP Support page and download the latest Windows 11 drivers for your printer.
  • Install the drivers and restart your computer.

5. Reset Printer Connection

  • Remove the printer from Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Re-add the printer using HP Smart or Windows Add Printer Wizard.
