HP4500 Scanner problems

HP Recommended
HP4500
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP 4500 has been working perfectly on Windows 10 for the past 5 years but following a recent update to Windows 10 the scanner function no longer works. Printing is fine so the wi-fi connection to my PC  is not an issue. I have tried running HP Print & Scan Doctor and the Printer test works, but on selecting the Scanner route the test falls over at the Check Driver stage. Separately I have run tests that tell me my HP drivers are up to date as is Windows 10. Can someone please advise? I would mention that a friend of mine who also has an HP4500 has exactly the same problem - again just with the scanner, not the printer, so it would appear this is a more general problem caused by interaction with a recent Windows 10 update.

@john_chaseside

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Thank you for your input, Betty, but my problem seems to have resolved itself as the scanner suddenly started working  again and the only thing I can see that has changed is that the device has connected itself to my network using a different IP address. It must have been connected before because the printing function worked but now via the new address the scanner software and the PC are talking to each other.
