HP7602 suddenly stopped supporting double sided document scan

As recently as a few weeks ago I successfully used the double sided document scan feature on our HP7602.  Today, the option to select double sided scanning simply was not there.  I restarted printer/scanner, computer, and uninstalled and re-installed app/driver.  Same thing; the double sided scan feature simply seems to have ceased to exist.  

Am I missing something?  Did HP somehow remove this feature remotely?  Very irritated by this.

I am sorry you are irritated.

I cannot verify the printer hardware supports automatic 2-Sided scan.

According to the documentation, the printer does not support automatic duplex scanning.

I cannot think of a scenario where HP would (or even could) reach out and disable the printer 2-sided scanning mechanics.

The printer supports a software based manual 2-sided scan option.

Are you using HP Scan or HP Universal Scan software?

If yes...

The full driver printer software might fail, need to be reinstalled, balk, object to the detected page / paper size or type, or suffer other indignities.

HP Scan is part of the full driver printer software.

The full driver printer software is available for supported versions of Windows.

This printer also supports a stand-alone version of HP Scan called HP Universal Scan. 

-- Notes --

• You need not install the standalone version of the HP Universal Scan Software if you (will) install the full driver. 
• HP Scan and HP Universal Scan are essentially the same software. 
• If you cannot stand to do without, the system will normally tolerate having both the full driver HP scan and the HP Universal Scan software installed at the same time.

-- What else? --

HP Smart (Windows) and HP App cannot add or support features not detected in the printer.

The app can manually add pages or manually reorder pages.  Not ideal.

Check / Apply Windows Updates 

• Check / Install any pending Windows Updates 
• If any updates are applied in Windows Updates, Restart your computer and log in

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

• Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
• If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
• Restart the computer and log in.

Install full driver printer software

• If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software – Offline Use Only

• Open the Web Page
• Download, Save, and Install the software.
• If using a USB cable to connect the printer to your computer, connect the cable when instructed to do so, near the end of the software installation process.
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Installation of the HP Universal Scan Software adds an "HP Scan" self-named shortcut icon to the Desktop.

NOTE

If you have installed the full driver printer software,

And

If the HP Scan that is installed is the "new format" (larger GUI and new layout),

Then

In general, you perhaps do not need to install HP Universal Scan -- the version of HP Scan that installs with the software for this printer is a functional match to the HP Universal Software.

That said, if you can't stand it for any reason, the system will tolerate installing both the full driver and the HP Universal Scan software.

• The Printer Assistant and the HP Scan Assistant, are dependent on printer model and supported software options for that printer.
• The Assistant type that is supported with a particular printer will be installed with that printer's full driver printer software.
• HP Scan, the format determined by the printer model, is installed with the full driver for the printer.

• When installed, the HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self named “HP Scan” shortcut
