Hi @LKatz1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the document feeder on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is not working when scanning, there are a few potential reasons for this issue. Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Check for Obstructions:

  • Make sure there are no obstructions in the document feeder. Even small pieces of paper or debris can cause issues.

Verify Document Size:

  • Ensure that the documents you are trying to scan using the feeder are within the supported size range. Exceeding the maximum or going below the minimum size may cause problems.

Clean the Rollers:

  • Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the rollers of the document feeder, causing feeding issues. Clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning solution. Refer to your printer's manual for specific instructions on cleaning.

Check for Sensor Issues:

  • Inspect the sensors in the document feeder for any signs of damage or blockage. If a sensor is malfunctioning, it may not detect the presence of documents.

Update Firmware/Software:

  • Ensure that your printer's firmware and scanning software are up to date. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues and improve performance.

Adjust Document Guides:

  • Ensure that the document guides in the feeder are correctly adjusted to the width of the documents you are scanning. Misalignment may cause feeding problems.

Reset the Printer:

  • Power off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Plug it back in and power it on. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches.

Check for Error Messages:

  • Check the printer's display or software for any error messages or codes that might provide more information about the issue.

Test with Different Documents:

  • Try scanning different types of documents to see if the issue persists. It could be specific to the type or condition of the paper.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
