My All-in-One HP OfficeJet 8710 recently started using the fax iine without real need.
There are no incoming faxes, nor outgoing faxes too in the queue, but the printer engages the fax line "out of the blue".
The settings are to recieve the incoming fax automatically (this happens once a year, on the average).
The diagnostics shows that everything is in order
Any suggestions?

Have you tried to set the rings to answer to maximum(6 rings)?
From the printer control panel display,
1.touch Fax .
2. Touch Setup , and then touch Preferences .
3. Touch Rings to Answer .
4. Touch to set the number of rings.
5. Touch Done

Hi @tripletsdad
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.
To better assist-
Are you using a shared line or a dedicated line?
Let's print fax test report-
- From the top of the screen, touch or swipe down the tab to open the Dashboard, and then touch ( Setup ).
- Touch Fax Setup.
- Touch Tools, and then touch Run Fax Test.
- The printer displays the status of the test on the display and prints a report.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Jay,
I've already tried all these simple checks before posting a question. The fax is working ok, connected to small office PBX. I also did an extensive search for similar problem, but couldn't find anything real.
The only problem I'm experiencing is that the printer, out of the blue, starts using the fax line, without actual fax in the outgoing queue or incoming. When this happens, the line becomes busy, however the printer status is not showing anything.
I also tried connecting the fax line to another phone line - the effect started after some time.
An obvious solution is to disable the automatic accept feature, bit this will beat the purpose of the fax.
I believe that this may be something in detection of busy line, bit don't have tools to check it.
