Have HP officejet 8720 can send fax when phone line is plugged in to 1-LINE but not receive fax; If phone is plugged in to 2-EXT can rec fax but not send?

Might be as simple as using the wrong type of phone cord - you need a two-wire phone cord for the Fax.

Next, Connect the phone cord to 1-Line

The entire subject of "Fax" is covered in depth and exquisite detail in the  User Guide

It will be easier for you to scan (quickly read) the guide rather than me trying post "just the right information" here.

For example,

Open the guide and search for 1-Line

Follow the steps to set up the fax (somewhat in order).

Test the Fax setup once you have it in place (Page 127) and

Test Fax Setup with the HP Fax Test Service
