HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I've been trying to find a solution for making OCR scans with my "HP Color Laser MFP 178nw" for a few days and I'm really desperate.

When I install the "HP_Color_Laser_MFP_178_179_Full_Software_and_Drivers_1.20.exe" there I can install OCR, but where the hell it is then?

With the software "HP MFP Scan" Software I have no problem to connect. With the Software "HP Scan" (where the OCR should be) i can't connect the printer with anything (maybe not supportet for my printer?). HP Smart works, but there is also no OCR option.

Maybe someone can help me with this...

Hi @Nico2133,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) scans with your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw, you need to use the correct software and ensure that OCR functionality is properly set up. Here’s a step-by-step guide that should help:

Verify Software Installation:

  • Ensure that you have installed the full software package for your printer, which should include the necessary OCR tools. You've mentioned you installed "HP_Color_Laser_MFP_178_179_Full_Software_and_Drivers_1.20.exe", so check if the OCR feature is part of this package.

Check Installed Programs:

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and look for an OCR-related application installed with your printer software. It might be labeled as part of the "HP Scan" or similar.

Use HP Software:

  • If "HP Scan" is not connecting, try using other HP software like "HP Smart" or "HP Scan and Capture" if available. Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your network and recognized by the software.

Check Printer Documentation:

  • Consult the printer's user manual or HP's official support website to verify if the OCR feature is supported and if there are any specific instructions or software needed for OCR scanning.

Update Software:  HP Color Laser MFP 178nw Software and Driver Downloads

  • Ensure that all your software, including drivers and OCR applications, is up to date. Sometimes, compatibility issues can be resolved with the latest updates.

Troubleshoot Connections:

  • If "HP Scan" is not connecting, double-check network settings and ensure that your printer is properly connected to the same network as your computer. Restart your printer and computer to refresh connections.

Refer to this document:  HP Color Laser MFP 178nw User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Sorry, but the answer doesn't help me at all...

Yes I have the correct software install. Yes under programs is "HP Scan OCR Software" installed.

Yes I am connected to my network.

Question remains the same, where or how can I scan with OCR ?
