HP Recommended

My Scanner bar stops in the first 3rd of the scan field after launching the scanner. And it makes some horrible sound by initiating as it is running thru the field and crushes at the end....
How can I reset my printer/scanner so that I can scan again?

Hi @OlliB52

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Thank you for clearly explaining the behavior of your HP Smart Tank 5105. If the scanner carriage stops partway through the scan area and produces a grinding or clicking sound, the scanner mechanism may not be completing its initialization correctly. A scanner reset and inspection can help restore normal operation.

Please try the following steps:

Turn the printer on.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer while it is powered on.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds.

While waiting, gently open the scanner lid and check the scanner glass area for:

  • Packing material or tape that may have been missed
  • Small objects or debris obstructing the scanner path
  • Any visible obstruction along the scanner bar travel path

Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet.

Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on if it does not power on automatically.

Allow the printer to complete its startup process and listen for the scanner bar to return to its home position.

Make a standalone copy from the printer control panel. This tests the scanner without involving the computer or HP App.

If the scanner still stops at approximately one-third of the scan area and produces the same noise during startup or copying, also try:

  • Ensure the scanner lock (if present on your unit) is in the unlocked position.
  • Clean the scanner glass and the narrow white backing strip under the scanner lid with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Perform a printer reset from the printer control panel:
    • Open Setup or Settings.
    • Select Printer Maintenance or Restore.
    • Choose Restore Factory Defaults.

If copying and scanning both fail after the reset, the issue is likely within the scanner mechanism itself rather than the HP App or computer connection.

Can you confirm whether the scanner makes the same sound and stops during a copy operation directly from the printer, or only when scanning from the HP App?

Take care, and have an amazing day!
