Hello,
I have tried unplugging, turning off and on the machine and I cannot get this error (scanner error 16) to resolve. I have also tried the HP Scan and Print DR.... Anyone else have this issue and how did you repair?
Thank You!

Hi @kmcmullin68,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Scanner Error 16" is a common issue with HP printers, often indicating a problem with the scanner's hardware or its connection to the printer's system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Check and Reset Connections
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
- Ensure that all cables, including the USB cable (if applicable), are securely connected.
2. Clean the Scanner Components
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a small amount of glass cleaner to clean the scanner glass. Ensure it’s dry before plugging the printer back in.
- Gently clean the thin strip of glass or plastic that runs along the edge of the scanner glass. This is where the scanner’s sensor moves.
3. Update Firmware and Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model to check for any available firmware updates.
- Download and install the latest printer drivers from the HP Support website.
4. Perform a Printer Reset
- If your printer has an option for a factory reset in the settings menu, perform it. This can sometimes clear up errors caused by software glitches.
5. Check for Obstructions
- Open the scanner lid and check for any paper jams or debris that might be obstructing the scanner's movement.
- Make sure no small objects or foreign materials are inside the scanner mechanism.
6. Run HP Diagnostic Tools
- HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, which can diagnose and fix many common printer issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
