How to connect all in one printer to phone with answering capability and non functioning fax

I have an ancient all in one telephone/answer/fax capabilty but the fax portion is no longer working.  How can I connect my HP all in one printer (includes fax) to the phone so I can still use the phone and answer function but the all in one picks up the incoming faxes automatically?  Right now I have the printer/fax plugged in to the same jack as the phone/fax so the printer/fax rings and displays caller but does not pick up faxes.  I can however send faxes from the printer/fax.

Unless you subscribe to a distinct ring tone service, your options are going to be limited. The fax machine has no way to know when the phone rings that it is a fax until it picks up or it recognizes the distinct ring tone. And once the fax picks up, if it is not a fax call it has no way to hang up and pass the call along.
