HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Envy 4520 Printer/scanner. My computer is a Lenovo laptop running Windows ll. I recently upgraded to this from a Windows 10 laptop. My printer is connected through WIFI.

With the previous Windows 10 laptop I could operate my scanner completely from the scanner, that is I could stand at the scanner and scan several pages then go to the laptop and find the scans on Windows  OneDrive cloud. I did not have to use any AP on the computer to do this. It was all done standing at the scanner.

I have not been able to setup this capability with the new Windows 11 computer. Now I must go to the scanner and load the paper then back to the computer and  start the scan then go back to the scanner to load the next page, etc. back and forth. The scanned pages still appear on OneDrive as before.  The failure happens because the scanner will not connect to my computer by name.

Printing from the computer works normally.

Can any one please tell me how to set up  my system to operate the scanner as before, scan multiple pages at the scanner and then return to the computer to use them?

Thank you.

Hi @CHASMOTOO,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed experience with the HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer and your recent upgrade to Windows 11. It's clear how frustrating it must be to have lost the convenient, standalone scanning functionality you previously enjoyed, especially when it used to work so seamlessly through OneDrive and Wi-Fi.

Let's walk through what’s going on and how to bring that ease back.

1. Reinstall the Full HP Software (Not Just the Driver)

  • Go to HP’s official software page for the ENVY 4520
  • Download and install HP Easy Start and let it install the full-feature driver and HP software, including:
    • HP Scan
    • HP Printer Assistant
    • Scan to Computer Setup

This ensures the correct scanning services and network communication tools are available.

2. Enable "Scan to Computer" in HP Printer Assistant

After installation:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant on your Windows 11 laptop.
  • Click “Scan” > “Manage Scan to Computer”.
  • Make sure to enable both:
    • ✔️Scan to Computer
    • ✔️Automatically start a scan on the Computer when I log on to Windows

This allows your printer to find your PC by name again and send scans directly to it over Wi-Fi.

3. Ensure the Printer and PC Are on the Same Network

  • Sometimes upgrades or router changes put the devices on different bands (e.g., 2.4GHz vs 5GHz).
  • Go into the printer’s wireless settings to confirm it is still connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  • On your PC, you can confirm this by typing ipconfig in Command Prompt and comparing it to the printer’s IP (you can print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer’s control panel).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
