Thank you @NonSequitur777

Some printers come with OCR scan tools.   In 2022 some OCR was removed due to either license issues or win11  compatibility.  if you have an older printer it may not longer be supported by the full feature printer / scanner driver.

Here is HPs universal scanner.

When I installed that universal scan and tried my smart tank 5001  I got a warning about having to buy some OCR tools and a free trial was offered

BeemerBiker_0-1785727732740.png

that tool did not recognize my cm1415 laserjet, only the 5001 smart tank

The new HP App was able to scan, but was unable to convert to text.  It also failed on my cm1415 but that is a 15 year old printer and never came with OCR tools

[EDIT] !!!!!!!!UNREAL!!!!!!!!

I just tried the older HP Smart and it was able to scan on my  cm1415 an convert to text!!!

Typically only Enterprise level products allow you to have OCR installed on the printer directly . For Pro and consumer products it is usually based on software or apps @BeemerBiker has covered the options in excellent detail.
