I use a shared wireless-connected printer/scanner, but recently have had some wireless problems which result in the scanner application (HPScan) failing with "could not connect" messages, or long delays (up to a couple of minutes) to scan a page. Since I am physically adjacent to the printer, I can plug in a USB cable and use a direct connection, but even though I have set the printer to use two ports (WLAN and USB001), HPScan always connects wirelessly. How can I configure the scanner application to use the USB connection if the wireless connection is unavailable?

@Maijstral,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

If you have configured the printer with 2 different ports for using it with USB and network, please make sure that the default port is selected as USB port when scanning.

Refer to the below image as an example. This printer has been configured to use as both network and USB printer.

But the network port has been selected as the default(check box is selected.)

If you want to use the printer with a USB port, then select the port type as USB in the Ports menu and click apply.

To change the settings, go to 'Control Panel' > 'Devices and Printers'

Right click on the printer icon > Printer Properties > Ports > Select Port > Apply > Ok.

You can also create 2 printer instances/icons on the control panel menu under devices and printers.

1 instance for the USB connection and other for the Network connection.

You can simply change the default printer depending on whether you are using the printer as a USB device or as a Network device.

Refer to Step 3 from this document to add a printer.

Let me know if this information helps.
