Hi @bird8881,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with your HP 15 notebook and HP LaserJet MFP M283cdw printer, particularly with scanning, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the problem.

For HP Smart Issues:

  • Update HP Smart: Ensure that you have the latest version of HP Smart installed on your computer. Go to the Microsoft Store or the HP Smart website to download the latest version.
  • Reinstall HP Smart: Uninstall HP Smart, restart your computer, and then reinstall the application. This can help to resolve any software-related issues.
  • Check Network Connection: Ensure that your computer and the printer are connected to the same network. Sometimes, connectivity issues can prevent HP Smart from finding the printer.
  • Firewall/Antivirus Settings: Check your firewall or antivirus settings to ensure they are not blocking HP Smart or the printer. You may need to add exceptions for the HP Smart application.

For WIA Scan Error:

Check Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type services.msc and press Enter.
  • Locate "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" in the list.
  • Ensure that the service is running. If not, right-click and choose "Start."

Restart WIA Service:

  • Open a Command Prompt with administrative privileges (Run as administrator).
  • Type net stop stisvc and press Enter.
  • Type net start stisvc and press Enter.

Update Scanner Drivers:

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X and select "Device Manager").
  • Find your scanner under "Imaging devices."
  • Right-click and select "Update driver."

Reinstall Scanner Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, uninstall the scanner.
  • Disconnect the scanner from your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reconnect the scanner, and Windows should reinstall the drivers.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your operating system is up to date. Sometimes, updates include fixes for scanning issues.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the official HP website. It can automatically diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4 thank you for your reply.  When I removed HP Smart and tried to download an updated copy I received "Something happened on our end". I propbably tried restarting my computer 6 times - same response.

Using Windows I can print and I can scan to a USB drive. Not a perfect solution but it works.
